Shaken Baby Debate

About the Book

To amplify the voices of the voiceless, Dr. Arene poured his years of research and empathy into the book “Shaken: How Junk Science tears families apart. This compelling work was written for families and concerned citizens – not for lawyers or academics. Inside its pages, you’ll find the human stories behind the headlines: parents and caregivers who went from calling 911 for help to being put in handcuffs; the agony of losing a child and then being accused of causing that loss. You’ll also find eye-opening interviews with medical experts who challenge the status quo, and with wrongfully accused parents who fought to clear their names. The book breaks down complex science into clear, everyday language, helping readers understand why doctors fiercely debate SBS and how a diagnosis can go so tragically wrong.

Written with warmth and passion, “Shaken” guides you through real courtroom dramas, the latest medical findings, and the author’s personal mission to prevent injustice. You’ll learn about groundbreaking cases – like the Wisconsin babysitter Audrey Edmunds, who was convicted of shaking a baby in 1996 and then exonerated 11 years later when new science proved her innocence . You’ll read about fathers like Robert Roberson, who spent decades in prison (and nearly faced execution) because of symptoms now known to stem from natural causes . These stories are woven together to illustrate a critical point: when it comes to investigating infant injuries, things are not always what they seem.

Why I’m Fighting This Battle

ShakenBabyDebate.com was founded by Dr. Ike Arene,, a devoted child advocate and ER physician who refused to stay silent after witnessing innocent families being torn apart. Dr. Arene’s journey into this issue began in the most personal way – as a father and practicing ER physician for over twenty years he has treated infants with “the triad” and particularly in those cases where there are no obvious signs of external trauma, Dr. Arene has witnessed firsthand the unimaginable nightmare some parents and caregivers have been subjected to. The shock and heartbreak of such experiences lit a fire in him. How could loving parents be treated like criminals with no evidence beyond a doctor’s theory? Determined to seek answers, he immersed himself in medical research, attended court hearings, and connected with others who had lived this ordeal. What Dr. Arene discovered was alarming: Shaken Baby Syndrome – a diagnosis he had once accepted at face value – is far from settled science. In fact, even some leading experts and courts now acknowledge that the traditional SBS theory was built on unproven assumptions . Realizing that families were suffering due to this flawed paradigm, Dr. Arene vowed to make a difference.

A Personal Message from the Author

Every day, I hear from another terrified parent or caregiver – a mother jailed while her baby fights for life in a hospital, a father sobbing as he proclaims his innocence, a grandmother begging for someone to believe them. I have spoken with families whose lives have been shattered by a diagnosis that we now know is not infallible. I’ve sat in courtrooms holding my breath as new evidence came to light, and I’ve cried tears of joy when an unjust conviction was finally overturned. But for every victory, there are many others still waiting for justice.
I wrote “Shaken” and created this site because I refuse to let innocent families suffer in silence. This is not just about scientific debates in journals – it’s about babies, and mothers, and fathers, and the fundamental truth that no one should be punished for a tragedy they didn’t cause. I am passionate about this issue because I believe in both protecting children and protecting innocent caregivers. We can do both. By learning the truth and speaking out, we can save families from needless heartbreak and ensure that real child abuse is never overlooked.
Thank you for visiting, for listening, and for caring. Together, we can bring about a future where medical investigations seek truth, not scapegoats – and where justice prevails over judgment.
